He doesnt want people to master how naïve he is about the world, but he cant consist his own surprise at other times. Hes caught in the dangerous riptide between childhood and the adult world, youth. Hes not quite an an jaded enough to mas k his surprise, but not even so young enough to revel in it. I believe this throughout the course of this novel he comes to pick up his part in the adult world, more so than when he leaves Pencey.
Revelation #2: The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the luxurious ring you afford to let them do it, and not say anything. If they evanesce off, they fall off, but its bad if you say anything to them.(p.211) Now, this is wholly opposite to what Holden says when hes lecture to Phoebe about the poem.
